This idea—the idea that even in the dark, we are alive—comes from the brilliant adrienne maree brown’s book, Pleasure Activism. Obviously, I am drawn to this concept of aliveness in the dark.
In fact, I spoke recently to the lovely
of WriteSPACE, and she referred to the name “Writing in the Dark” as connected to the value of writing about hard stories, dark stories. But it’s not, actually. As I explained to Helen, it’s about writing into the unknown, writing toward discovery, surprise, and revelation rather than reciting what we already think we know. And I think this is in direct conversation with what adrienne maree brown is talking about when she says, “Pleasure reminds us that, even in the dark, we are alive.” Writing reminds us that, even in a state of unknowing, we are deeply alive … and deeply perceptive. Even in a dream state!
