I’ve never been a joiner, and I used to be kind of proud of how I knew how to “go it alone.” Until about ten years ago, I thought of myself as an isolated creative type, and I even wrongly attributed some of my youthful writing successes to the fact that I kept my head down and my writing solitary. Indeed, I believed was the right and best and maybe even only way to make good art.
