Last week’s Camp Thread was such a joy. Your stories were delightful, weird, funny, heartbreaking and, yes, we are going to have a Writing in the Dark Camp in 2025. Mark your calendars for August 30-September 6, 2025. An island at the edge of the Boreal forest near the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many more details to come soon.

Meanwhile, can we talk today about strategies for writing through dark times? It’s the world, yes, but, also, I know so many people who are going through the hardest things, people who find great solace in writing and who find their grief compounded when they get locked out of their creative work, and who want to find their way back in.

I did once respond to a Lit Salon question about how yes, you should finish your book even if the world is ending. But today, I’m thinking more about the personal weight of things, the weight of grief, and how to keep making and remaking real new things in spite of it.

How do you stay connected to your writing and your creative life during times of heaviness?

Love,
Jeannine
