Writing in the Dark with Jeannine Ouellette

🧵 Thursday Thread: What Now?

Beyond vote, write letters, join demonstrations, donate, support mutual aid, support independent journalism, and boycott, what can we do to stop the authoritarian takeover of the U.S.?

I’m short on words today, given the tragic events in Minneapolis (which I wrote about yesterday, in case you missed it). And ICE is still here, terrorizing our schools and communities with what seems like increased vigor.

So yes, I am short on words. I’m tired. I’m heartsore. I’m furious. I’m but I’d love to hear your words.

As it all escalates—Venezuela, the corrupt business deals (oh, right, the Venezuela invasion is that, too), the immigration crackdowns and the propaganda around them, targeting political opponents with escalating violence, increased use of federal and military forces, etc. etc.—what are the steps ordinary citizens can take to push back?

Additionally, how can we best support one another? How can we take the best care of each other as this violence spreads?

Also, please link your favorite independent journalists and activist organizations below.

I’ll start with some of the folks I follow regularly for factual reporting on politics, social issues, reproductive rights and the criminalization of women’s bodies, and misuse of power:

Heather Cox Richardson, Letters from an American

Judd Legum, Popular Information

Jessica Valentini, Abortion, Everyday

Marisa Kabas, The Handbasket

Hamilton Nolan, How Things Work

I’d love your voices here today if you’re willing and able. I appreciate you.

Love,

Jeannine
