To note, I absolutely loved our conversation about money last week, and would love to continue that sometime in the future. I was so happily surprised that so many of you knew about Lynne Twist’s work (The Soul of Money), which just goes to show you that maybe I’ve never really spoken out loud about the impact of that book and Twist’s philosophy on my life?
Anyway, thank you for such a thoughtful deep dive into the various influences on our thinking about money, and how those influences have (and still do) play out in our lives. I learned so much and greatly appreciated your candor!
For this week, something lighter!
What are you watching now?! And what do we all need to be watching with you?!
Movies, TV series, one-off shows, documentaries, etc., old and new, what’s been giving you entertainment, solace, and new things to think about—including the many modes of visual storytelling—lately?
As for me, you already know how much I loved Thelma the other night. Total win.
On the TV side, we’ve been watching—on the recommendations of many writers I know—Somebody, Somewhere as of last month, and we’re in season two of three. If you have watched or are watching, spill your thoughts? My feelings are mixed, mainly because of the unbelievable emphasis on drinking to drunkenness. I don’t know if I am supposed to be concerned about it, or not—especially since Sam’s mother’s alcoholism did so much damage in the family. It’s a little confusing, but I’m still curious.
Meanwhile, I am also curious about a genre that fellow WITD-er Joshua Davies introduced me to recently as British procedurals. He provided a generous round-up of recs, and I plan to choose one to start with soon. Heres’s Joshua’s list (thanks, Joshua!):
Ripper Street - love it!
Marcella - really interesting and great
The Tunnel
Shetland - so good, really wonderful Scottish scenery and lead actor
Vera - Brenda Blethyn is great!
Oh - and 2 others:
Blue Lights - Irish police procedural that’s new and really great.
Also: Happy Valley. Female lead and wow this one is great.
Maybe more compelling than all of these: Babylon Berlin. 2 seasons, German. Can watch dubbed or with subtitles. Period piece in the compelling and decadent end of the Weimar Republic just prior to the Nazis taking over.
And Penny Dreadful if you haven’t seen it: dark, gothic, beautiful aesthetically and Eva Green is superlative in it. Great use of reimagining public domain characters (including Frankenstein, Dorian Gray).
So, now it’s your turn! What should we all be watching to survive the rest of winter (and everything that comes with it)?
Love,
Jeannine
