Shadow

As we approach the summer solstice (!!) and the sun gets higher and brighter in the sky, we have the opportunity to become more aware of our shadows. What does it mean to have a shadow? What role does our shadow play in our lives—literally and metaphorically?

When Peter Pan loses his shadow, he cries, and Wendy sews it back on for him. Little children naturally delight when first they discover their own shadows. A lunar eclipse is quite literally when we witness our own shadow (on the planetary level) crossing the surface of the moon. There we are, we might shout. We see proof of our own existence.

Take some time to observe your shadow this week, it's silly shapes and trickster nature, its solemnity, its grounded nature and its fleeting essence. Write a letter to your shadow, your real actual physical shadow. Let this prompt take you where it leads. Let it surprise you.

Expect nothing, but be open to everything.
